I first became aware of Sophie’s Appeal via my partner who was a trustee at the time. I’d previously fundraised for a national charity by cycling Ride London 100 but didn’t feel part of that charity due to very little contact from them. The thought of cycling to raise funds for a small, family-based charity was very appealing and I have now cycled London to Paris 2018 and London to Amsterdam 2022 raising over £5k for them. Over the last few years I’ve become more involved with fundraising events and offered to take on the responsibility of sourcing and preparing the food for the Quiz Night’s as I also have a background in Catering. It’s a privilege to be able to give my time to such a fantastic charity and I’m constantly thinking of more ways to raise funds especially now I feel I’m too old for those long bike rides … but who knows, there may be one more in me.

I first became aware of Sophie’s Appeal after seeing a photo of Sophie on Facebook. I asked the friend who shared it who the little girl was, and she shared Sophie’s story. I was so moved by Sophie’s story I wanted to help in any way I could. I offered to help at fundraising events, had tables at various car boot sales, organised a collection box in a local play area and set the charity up on the Giving Lottery. Thinking of Sophie’s has helped me remember there is always someone worse off than me and my issues with opening my door and walking outside.

I’ve known Lin & Mike (Sophie’s parents) for some time, mainly through my mate Foggy and Norwood Primary School. I love Sophie’s Appeal because it’s a local, self-funded charity and the things they do, like Sophie’s Place and Sophie’s Rainbow Retreat, are amazing. I try to pop along to events as often as possible, help out and donate when I can.
